As graduation season gets underway, a woman from Dorchester has an extra special reason to celebrate: Norma Heath went from being homeless to graduating Harvard and looking ahead to a graduate degree.

Perspectives of Adult Children on Parent’s in Recovery is a peer-led initiative that aims to give voices to the experiences of adult children of parents with mental health and/or substance misuse challenges. The goals of the project are to raise awareness, reduce stigma and isolation, and share lessons learned and resources. The video includes five adult children reflecting on their individual experiences of being a child of a parent in recovery, stigma that they faced, ways that they were resilient, and strategies they used to maintain a positive relationship with their parents.

Family for Depression Awareness- Rev. Dr. Norma

Norma thought depression was a White person’s problem. Although she was struggling, stigma created a barrier for Norma to get the help she needed. By getting more education about depression, finding doctors that she could better relate with, and learning which supports helped, Norma didn’t let stigma win. Today, Norma can proudly say she is able to manage the ups and downs of life by having her family and community by her side.

“A goal a day keeps the depression away.” Ziona’s path to recovery has been a long process. During a particularly dark period of time, she could not see a future for herself. With support from her family and treatment team, she eventually found the resources she needed to get and stay well. Now, Ziona shares how she created a life worth living with the hope of helping someone else do the same.
